The link between tunnelling about in one's proboscis and Alzheimer's disease claims to have been found in a theory put forward by scientists in Pakistan and Qatar.
The reasoning goes that if you stick your finger up your nose, the germs travel along to the olfactory bulb, an area in the lower part of the brain linked to smell, causing infection.
The notion has been put forward that having yourself a good old dig around is a "significant risk factor", with a call for case-control studies with larger sample populations.
But... fear thee not, trunk unpackers.
